Prayer
In my study this week I’ve been (re)focusing both my mind and heart on the topic of prayer. And, wow, has it been convicting. The consistent practice of prayer will always be something I struggle with (I suppose I could blame the occasional bouts of ADD - but I know better then that) but one thing I’ve noticed is when I’m reminded of the purpose of prayer it brings me back to where I need to be; on my knees.
I came across this excellent summary of what prayer is and its ultimate purpose (the part that really struck me is in italics): “Prayer is communion with God, usually comprising petition, adoration, praise, confession, and thanksgiving. The ultimate object of prayer in both OT and NT is not merely the good of the petitioner but the honor of God’s name.”
When was the last time my prayers focused on seeking God’s honor above my own? If I were to summarize my prayers over the last week this is what I would find; “Lord I want this, Lord I want that, Lord do this, Lord do that”. Instead of a self-serving mindset, how about, “Lord be glorified in this area of my life, Lord be honored in this circumstance at work/church/home.”
KInd of changes the way we see prayer doesn’t it?
